A collective voice to protect staff, safeguard stores, and restore trade integrity.

Retailers are part of everyday life in Australian communities. When crime rises, staff, customers, and neighbourhoods feel it first.

who we are

The Retail Safety Alliance is a national group of retailers, retail organisations, and industry participants working to make our local shopping environments safer.

Our members operate in suburbs, towns, and regional centres across Australia. They employ local people, serve local customers, and are often the most visible businesses in their communities.

Over recent years, retailers have seen a sharp rise in theft, intimidation, and violence. These issues are no longer isolated incidents; they are persistent, organised, and increasingly connected to wider criminal activity.

What retailers are witnessing on the ground is not acceptable. Crime is going unchecked in too many locations, placing staff at risk, undermining the safety of stores, and affecting the communities that surround them. This cannot continue as a normal or inevitable part of doing business.

What we focus on

What the Alliance focuses on and how it operates

Retail crimeand theft

Persistent theft and organised retail crime are placing pressure on staff safety, store viability, and confidence in local shopping areas.

Violence and intimidation

Retail workers are facing growing levels of abuse, threats, and physical violence, particularly in convenience and small-format stores where exposure is highest.

Illicit tobacco and illegal trade

Illegal trade, including illicit tobacco, is a key concern because it fuels organised crime, drives retail crime, and undermines lawful businesses, local jobs, and community safety.

How we work to improve retail safety

The Retail Safety Alliance brings together on-the-ground experience, evidence, and advocacy to drive practical change.

We:

Listen to retailers and frontline workers to understand what is happening locally.

Bring industry insights together to identify common patterns and risks.

Advocate to governments, regulators, and enforcement agencies for stronger, more consistent responses.

Support discussions with credible data, case studies, and real-world experience.

Our role is to help turn shared concern into coordinated action.
